One of the best-value reds at Vinmonopolet, and one that has held the same price since 2008. It is made from touriga nacional, jaen, alfrocheiro preto and tinta roriz, the last of these better known as tempranillo, and it comes about as close to the essence of Portuguese red as you could ask for. All for a tidy 180 kroner.
Alvaro Castro is one of Portugal's finest wine producers, and makes all his wines together with his daughter Maria, who has worked alongside her father since 2000. Together they run the family estate Quinta da Pellada in the Dão region, south of the Douro. Alvaro himself took over in 1980 and developed it into one of the country's very best wine addresses—especially when it comes to price versus quality.
